ABOUT ME

WHERE I’M FROM

I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where Art has made an incredible mark, and is living up to the hype. I am proud of my city and neighborhood. It has made a complete transformation throughout the years. I am lucky to have witnessed it, and grow, as I become an artist.

PERSONAL LIFE

I was raised by a single mother. A strong woman that I will give the title an "Artist" because she deserves it. My mother came along way. She was forced to become a seamstress to support her three children in Dominican Republic. When she came to the United States she decided to continue and pursue it to make a living. By the time I was born, she became a veteran creating art in real life. She may not have considered herself an artist. But, she was more than that, she was a teacher, showing her peers how to bring an idea to life. Perhaps my desire adapted as we once shared the same feelings. As a child I admired her, and her talent. I wanted to replicate her work. I wasn't born rich, but I felt like it. I thought I was the cool kid, wearing school uniforms that she hand crafted herself. Perhaps it was solely based on her financial state, but she was talented. I remember standing out knowing my mom was my personal designer. I was proud. I later found out her designs made it out of a factory that worked with known department stores. Today I use her as inspiration as she spends her time redecorating her homes in NYC and Dominican Republic.

HOW I GOT STARTED

I probably would've been doing something in the medical field, if it wasn't for my need of adventure. I'm always striving for new experiences. In 2009 I decided to change my major in college for the 3rd time, finally being introduced to something that made me feel like a child again. After my professors were hard on me I almost gave up, but I decided to use that as motivation. I became OCD with my designs, and anything I created or did in general. As I advanced in my studies I decided to take it serious. One project became a life lesson. I needed to replicate a Van Gogh drawing, as we know replication is always impossible especially when you rely on your memory. But, my professor didn't think so. He wanted a replication. He wanted me to draw the image exactly like Van Gogh. My argument stood on trial in front of the classroom. I told him "its physically impossible to replicate an original artwork, I can only use his work as inspiration and interpret it the way that I see it and feel it". I was proud of myself. I haven't been diagnosed colorblind; the image was black and white. He was being hard on me, but I thank him. In 2010 he influenced me to become a freelancer. I can't paint like Picasso, draw like Van Gogh, or even design like Paul Rand. I am Suzy Rey, I paint, I draw, I love to illustrate, and occasionally I like to take pictures. I hope my work can one day inspire others.
